Chloramphenicol is used to treat bacterial infections of the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by chloramphenicol-resistant organisms. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, and Neisseria species are some of the bacteria that can cause infections.
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic that works by interfering with the transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes, inhibiting bacterial protein production.
Adult and Children: Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours and then every 4 hours thereafter. Treatment should be continued for approximately 7 days, but should not be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by the physician.
Chymotrypsin may be suppressed if Chloramphenicol is taken at the same time.
Individuals having a history of hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or any of the preparation's constituents should avoid it.
Short-term topical use of Chloramphenicol has not been associated with a systemic adverse response. Burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blood dyscrasia, allergic or inflammatory reactions, vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis were the most commonly reported side effects.
It has not been determined whether or not it is safe to use during pregnancy or lactation. As a result, only use when the doctors deem it necessary.
Chloramphenicol ophthalmic solution should never be used to treat or prevent mild infections. Treatments that are repeated or that last a long time should be avoided. After extended ophthalmic usage, blood dyscrasias (granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and mild anemia) may develop.
